The History of the Internet
An excellent survey about internet facts, compiled in 1996
by Parallax, might give you a short insight into basic figures of the internet. The numbers
stated are out-of-date, but the basic facts remain correct. On my
Internet Growth page you can find actual figures of internet users, hosts, etc. for the last
few years.
If you prefer it short and compact, you might look at The Internet,
a talk given in 1993. A Brief History of the Internet, compiled by Barry
Leiner, gives a good roundtrip (including a very nice timeline!). Undoubedly one of the best documents
on Internet History is Hobbes' Internet Timeline.
